Three team members of the research project, Hilde, Brent and Ming-kin, participated in the Annual Meeting of the Association of Asian Studies, March 21-24, 2013 in San Diego. On the first day of the conference (March 21), Ming-kin presented a paper titled “Shifting Loyalty: The Case of Liu Mengyan (1219-1295)” in the panel “Collaborating with the World Conquerors: Non-Mongol Officials, Local Elites, and Governing Strategies in the Early Yuan Dynasty”. Through the case study of a leading Southern Song official Liu Mengyan, he evaluated the Yuan court’s attempt at utilizing the networks of former Song elites for the sake of facilitating its governance in south China.

On the 23^rd, Hilde and Brent gave a presentation titled “Linking Texts and Databases: The Use of APIs” in the “Workshop on Computational Tools and Digital Resources for Chinese History and Literature”. They demonstrated how texts and databases can be linked by using APIs and discussed how the database of Song notebooks and the full text of notebooks have been linked to the China Biographical Database (CBDB). Other presenters in the workshop illustrated how digital tools can be applied in humanities research. Shih-pei Chen and Merrick Lex Berman (both from Harvard University) discussed the features of the CBDB (http://isites.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k16229), the China Historical GIS (http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~chgis/), the G.W. Skinner Archive (http://skinner.hmdc.harvard.edu/), and ChinaMap (http://worldmap.harvard.edu/chinamap/), while Michael A. Fuller (University of California, Irvine) introduced the logic behind database construction.
